# When do Codex usage limits reset?

Codex usage can be limited over two windows: a 5-hour window and a weekly window. A new 5-hour window starts with your first message after the previous one ends. The weekly window resets 7 days after the first request of your current weekly period, so every account has its own reset time. Run /status in the Codex CLI or open your usage dashboard to see yours. Separately, OpenAI sometimes resets usage for everyone at once; this site tracks those global resets.

## The 5-hour window

On plans that have it, the 5-hour window is a short usage budget. It starts when you send your first message in Work or Codex after the previous window ends, not at a fixed clock time. You can use it up before the five hours pass even if you still have weekly usage left. The OpenAI Help Center says Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 currently have no 5-hour limit in Work and Codex.

## The weekly window

The weekly limit sets how much included usage you get over a weekly period. The period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after a reset, and the next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that request. Because the clock starts on your own first request, there is no weekly reset time shared by all users. When both limits apply, you need allowance left in both to keep working.

## Global resets are not your own window

A global (automatic) reset refreshes the eligible limits named in OpenAI's announcement for many accounts at once. You don't apply it yourself, and it doesn't appear as a saved reset in Settings. These resets are usually announced on X by Codex lead Tibo (@thsottiaux). This site tracks those posts, and the history page lists each reset with its source.

## Banked resets

A banked reset stays in your account until you use it or it expires. Using a full banked reset refreshes both your 5-hour and weekly Work and Codex limits and moves your weekly reset date. It is only used up when it actually refreshes at least one eligible window. Banked resets from referrals must be used within 30 days of being added, unless the offer says otherwise.

## Paid instant resets

Plus and Pro customers may be able to buy an instant reset in the desktop app's Usage settings, or from an offer after reaching the weekly limit. It restores both the 5-hour and weekly allowance right away, starts a new weekly period at your next request, and can't be saved for later. It pulls your normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding extra usage. Availability depends on the account and billing country.

## How to check your own reset time

In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status to see the limits that apply to your account and when they reset. Settings and the usage dashboard also show which allowance is used up, your credit balance and any reset time. OpenAI Support does not reset usage limits on request.

## Questions

### When does the Codex weekly limit reset?

Seven days after the first request of your current weekly period. The period starts with your first request after a reset, so the time differs for each account. /status shows yours.

### Does a new 5-hour window restore my weekly limit?

No. The two limits refill separately. If your weekly allowance is used up, a new 5-hour window won't let you continue; you need the weekly reset, a global reset, a banked reset, an instant reset or credits.

### Did Codex reset today?

The live status page answers that from Tibo's public posts and shows the time of the last completed global reset and any scheduled one.

### Do banked resets expire?

Yes. A banked reset stays in your account until you use it or it expires. Referral resets must be used within 30 days of being added, unless the offer says otherwise.

### Can OpenAI Support reset my Codex limit?

No. The OpenAI Help Center says Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. Wait for your reset, or use a banked reset, an instant reset or credits if your account offers them.
